How to Prepare for a Test Shoot as a New Model
If you’re in the fashion photography or modeling world, you’ve probably heard the word “test shoot” thrown around before. But what’s the actual industry standard definition? Who is supposed to benefit from test shoots? And how exactly do you prepare for one, or even find a photographer to work with?
As a professional fashion photographer, I’m here to answer all of those questions and more. I’ll break down exactly what a test shoot is, how to prepare for one, and more so you can finally understand everything you need to know about test shoots for models.
Table of Contents:
What is a Test Shoot?
First things first: let’s start by getting on the same page about what a test shoot is. In the fashion photography industry, test shoots are portfolio-building photoshoots meant to “test” how a model does on camera and how they photograph—hence the name.
I’ll add that, as a fashion photographer, I do feel the term has evolved; these days, when you hear “test shoot,” it usually refers to a collaborative photoshoot focused on adding something new to a model’s portfolio (and often the photographer’s, too).
Though I say collaborative, it’s important to note that a test shoot can be either paid or unpaid. An unpaid test shoot would involve multiple creatives (a model and a photographer, and maybe even a makeup artist, stylist, and more) coming together to create images to level up all of their portfolios. These unpaid test shoots are just as serious as paid photoshoots; time is still being invested, and everyone wants the photoshoot to be a success.
Paid test shoots are also very common, especially for newer models looking to build their portfolios. New models might pay an experienced photographer to test with to ensure they capture strong images to add to their portfolio. The investment is most often worth it for new models, who get the chance to work with a skilled photographer who would help them plan the shoot in addition to capturing excellent photos for their book.
Understanding the Purpose of a Test Shoot for Models
Test shoots are super important for new models who are developing their portfolios, or any model looking to continue building their book, improving in front of the camera, and/or moving into a new market.
Test shoots are valuable for models because they:
Help build a professional portfolio
Give the model valuable experience in working with a photographer and team, without all the pressure
Offer networking opportunities and the chance to build industry connections
And more!
Because there’s no client or campaign involved, test shoots are a great way to get both experience and new photos with fellow creatives in a lower-pressure environment.
So You’ve Booked a Test Shoot: Now What?
So you understand the importance of test shoots, and you’ve gone ahead and set one up. That’s amazing!! Wondering what happens next? Here’s what you should know and do leading up to a test shoot, at the photoshoot itself, and after the test shoot.
Leading Up to Your Test Shoot:
For most test shoots, the photographer will send over a moodboard featuring their ideas for the photoshoot and the types of images they hope to capture. Before your test shoot, it’s a great idea to review this moodboard or inspiration photos for the shoot to inspire your posing and direction. You can also save your own ideas to look over.
You may even want to practice your posing and angles in the mirror beforehand to increase your confidence leading up to the shoot. Even more experienced models need to practice!
You’ll also want to make sure you have proper grooming before the photoshoot. Complete your skin care routine, wash your hair, and make sure your nails are clean or your polish isn’t chipped. Don’t save all your prep until the last minute, either!
It also helps to prep your outfits beforehand so you’re not scrambling the morning of the shoot. Set aside your clothing pieces in advance, and make sure you order any needed items with plenty of time to spare.
Pro tip: If you’ve ordered clothes you’re planning to return after the photoshoot, leave the tags on and let your photographer know. We’re used to being careful with things like this when shooting!
If you’re a signed model, you’ll also likely want to communicate with your agency about the type of work they think you need to add to your book. Knowing what your portfolio is missing will help the direction of your test shoot and make sure you get the most out of your experience.
What To Bring To A Test Shoot:
The photographer will likely let you know what you need to bring for the test shoot, especially if they have a specific vision in mind for the shoot. Bring any items the photographer requests, of course. In general, regardless of the type of photoshoot, I always recommend bringing:
3-5 options for outfits based on the moodboard (the more options for the team to choose from, the better!)
Undergarments: as a rule of thumb, I recommend bringing neutral-colored undergarments, strapless bra, a black bra, and a nude bra
On-trend shoes: if you don’t know what to bring, a pair of black heels, a pair of combat boots, and a pair of on-trend sneakers are always great to have
Makeup touch-ups
Hair ties & bobby-pins
Water, snacks: keep your energy up, especially for a long day on set
The Day of the Test Shoot:
Photoshoot day is finally here! When you’re getting ready, you’ll want to keep your makeup simple (unless otherwise specified by the team); after all, a test shoot is intended to show how you look on camera.
Give yourself enough time to iron or steam any wrinkled clothes and neatly pack everything you need to take with you. If you can do this a day or two in advance, that’s even better!!
Most importantly, make sure you’re on time!! You want to get the best use out of your time for the photoshoot, and you definitely don’t want to waste the time of anyone on set. Arriving 10-15 minutes early is a great rule of thumb :)
During Your Test Shoot:
Arrive at your test shoot with a positive attitude. It’s totally okay to be nervous, but remember that everyone on set wants you to succeed, and they’re here to help!
When you start shooting with the photographer, pay attention to the direction they give you. Don’t be scared to ask clarifying questions if you’re confused; we’d much rather you speak up! And don’t be afraid to try new poses, too. A test shoot, as the name implies, can be used to “test” or try new things! An unexpected pose may result in your favorite image from the shoot.
And remember, no photographer wants to take a bad photo of you—they’re here to help you look your best so everyone gets strong images for their portfolios. If something doesn’t look right, they’ll tell you!
Remember to be kind, professional, and open to feedback. Test shoots are a networking opportunity, and you want everyone to remember you as someone who was amazing to work with. Networking also means you’ll want to get contact information for the people you worked with. Following everyone on social media is a great place to start!
After the test shoot:
You did it!! You have another successful test shoot under your belt: what now?
First, remember to have patience when waiting for the photos. Standard turnaround time can be anywhere from 2-4 weeks, but we promise it’ll be worth the wait.
When you receive your gallery of images, get excited to share them! Whether it’s with your agency or potential future agencies, add your strongest images to your portfolio.
You can also share your photos on social media—just don’t forget to properly tag/credit everyone who was involved! You may even want to send a special thank you to the team to show your appreciation for working with them.
Now it’s time to start planning your next test!
